What artists inspire you?
I’m inspired by so many different aspects of different artists, from the guitar playing of Clapton, SRV, Hendrix, Rodrigio & Gabriela, to the songwriting of Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Fiona Apple, Sara Bareilles, and Bob Dylan. Plus, I love the way bands and artists like Foo Fighters, Grateful Dead, and Justin Timberlake have mastered the art of live shows and performances, to how The Beatles and James Brown were masters of melody. If you’re out there doing your own thing, writing your music, and pouring your heart and soul into the craft that you love so much, then I think you’re inspiring everyone. I think you can draw inspiration from anyone doing it on their terms.How would you describe your music style?
I’ve always called it “alternative-pop,” as a half-hearted, half-joke. Because truthfully, I love so many types of music that I think my love for blues, funk, rock, and pop will always shine through. When I sit down to first write a song, I try to focus on lyrics and melody, whether there's a guitar part already written or I'm writing to a piece of music. My goal has always been for everyone to feel and identify with the lyrics in some capacity while having a melody they can bump on the highway or have in their ear while they’re on break and everything in between; hopefully, it sticks with them. I want my music to help people get through life’s complex changes and winding roads, wherever it may take them. I want to help with any of those moments the best I can. Where is a unique place you played music?
Two locations immediately come to mind, The Pawnee Buttes trail, which borders Wyoming and Colorado. It wasn't fun hiking with music and film gear, but it was a wonderful experience looking out into pure majestic plains as far as the eye can see and really feeling that peace. The other would be in the middle of Seminole State Park in Wyoming. I've always been fascinated at playing in remote areas where you typically wouldn't see live music. Don't be surprised if you see me playing under the Northern Lights in Oslo, in front of the Catatumbo River, Iceland, or even Antarctica one day. Those might be quicker gigs because I'll be freezing, as well as my laptop's motherboard, but the experience and excitement will be there. 😆 I'm pretty open to playing music just about anywhere in the world; the woods, the desert, doesn't matter to me; the more remote, exotic, and rare, the better. I've built my entire recording set up around mobility for these reasons. I just love playing in exotic locations. What quote describes you?
The two that I always try to remember the most are “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” By Maya Angelou and “The most I can do for my friend is simply to be his friend.” by Henry David Thoreau. We all fall short at times, but I try my best to live by these two life mottos. Name one person living or dead that you would love to perform with any day? I love this question because the answer isn't as obvious as everyone might think. As much as I love Hendrix, Clapton, Mayer, and Nirvana, I would love to play some live blues with Christina Aguilera. Her voice is so incredible she could obviously do anything, but wow, the idea of doing some blues lead behind her soulful voice brings a smile to my face. I also think that Sara Bareilles and I could write a perfect song together. I think our styles would gel.What’s a fun fact about you that most people might not know?
I absolutely love cooking, and from what I've heard, I'm pretty good at it. I worked in a few restaurants and didn’t get fired, so that’s a good sign. I've been cooking since I was about ten and really enjoyed cooking for other people. I think my best dishes are lasagna and stir-fry. I'm also a big lover and supporter of animals. I volunteer at local animal shelters and get excited when I meet new cat friends on my walks. I'm also an advocate for the homeless and have been working closely with Clean Kids Backpack Program. This charity helps homeless school children get personal hygiene products to attend school. My goal is to do as much good in this world while I'm here. Random things I love and collect are ties, watches, and baseball cards.Do you have any advice for people that want to pursue music?
Putting your heart and soul into your music is just half the battle. The other half is promoting and marketing yourself. You need to brand and market yourself. I would also get familiar with the business side of music. I've seen a lot of people get taken advantage of by labels, venues, producers, and other artists. Reading a few business law books goes a long way. The music business game has changed so much, and we now have so many more options to promote than we ever did before. Now we see the evolution of home recording. You don't have to save up a bunch of money to cut a demo anymore. I would get very familiar with branding, marketing (every social media platform and ones dedicated just for music), entertainment law, and home recording, so you don’t have to rely on anyone to help advance your music career. What is your favorite cereal?
Hands down it’s Frosted Flakes, I even have a personal motto for them, they’reeeeee, really awesome. Honorable mention is Raisin Bran, and a quick shout out to cookie crisp.
